Our Company History
In 1994, Communication Access Partners (CAP) was founded in Greensboro, NC to improve communication access for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Since then, CAP has experienced steady growth and now provides in-person ASL services in several states across the US. We’ve also added in-person spoken language interpreting services in several dozen languages and have the capability of nationwide services via phone/virtual interpreting and document translation services.

CAP purchased by Kevin Hiatt
CAP purchases Language Resources Inc of Greensboro, NC.
CAP completes several acquisitions, including Delaware based Deafinitions & Interpreting, Huntsville based Deaf Access and Verbatim Language Services.

Kevin Hiatt
President / CEO
With over a decade of business ownership experience in the language services industry, Kevin has proven that to successfully grow a business, you must deliver excellent service to your customers. Interpreters and clients alike trust Kevin and his team as reliable partners in bridging communication barriers.
Richard Tolbert
COO
With over a decade of business ownership Richard oversees the day-to-day operations at CAP. His experience in establishing cultures of effectiveness drives high levels of employee engagement and productivity. His 25 years’ experience in client-facing roles ensures the delivery of excellent customer service and continues to lead the company to enduring growth.
Don Hiatt
CFO
Don has led several companies to substantial growth through effective financial leadership. Under his tenure at Keystone Building and Tri- State Drywall, the companies consistently experienced double digit, year-over-year growth through responsible financial planning and strategic execution.
Kim Byrd
Kim first began working in the industry when she joined Language Resources in 2017. Since then, she has held various positions and is now CAP’s Contractor Manager. In this capacity, she ensures the relationship CAP has with its independent contractors is mutually beneficial, focused on delivering excellent service to our clients.
Sharon Berrier
After a brief time away, Sharon rejoined CAP in 2023 and currently manages our document translation business. Through her network of translators, she’s able to deliver high quality translations in over 100 languages with high efficiency and professionalism.
Caitlin Hotchkiss
Caitlin came to CAP through the Deaf Access acquisition. She lives in our Alabama market and is wrapping up her studies to become an interpreter!
Scheduling Team
Jessie Gray
Jessie joined CAP in 2023. She specializes in non-Spanish spoken languages in the Carolinas.
Brionna Hill
Brionna has been with CAP since 2025 and focuses on Spanish interpreting needs in the Carolinas.
Shonda Broadnax
Shonda joined CAP in 2025 and provides coverage for our Delaware, Philadelphia and Baltimore
Kathy Shuford
Kathy has been with Communication Access Partners since 2011. She focuses primarily on ASL interpreting in the Carolinas.
Cheryl Carrigan
Cheryl joined CAP in 2025 and provides overall scheduling coverage where needed. She also manages our Verbatim Language Services scheduling needs.
Bailey Boyett
Bailey joined CAP in 2025 and oversees our Alabama market’s scheduling needs. She also provides back-up coverage wherever needed.
