Communication Access Partners, Inc (CAP) is a woman-owned business that has been serving the greater Triad area and southwestern Virginia since 1994. CAP was established when ADA laws came into place.   We pride ourselves in providing communication services to those who need them. In an industry that is constantly evolving, we look to better ourselves and our service offerings. We welcome any feedback or suggestions you have for us.

CAP prides itself in staffing only the best Sign Language and Spanish interpreters to its customers. In a business world where it seems cutting corners and cutting costs is the norm, CAP maintains its high standards and expectations for our interpreters.

Kevin Hiatt, President & CEO

Kevin graduated from George Mason University in 2008 with degrees in Marketing and Foreign Languages. Most recently he owned and operated a small business in Northern Virginia, where he was born and raised. Prior to that, he worked full-time as a Spanish interpreter in Loudoun County, VA for various government agencies and for Loudoun County Public Schools. For more information, see his linkedin profile.

Kevin’s passion for languages and interpretation came while serving for two years in Mexico as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was there that he gained an appreciation for those who are not only capable, but willing to bridge the communication gaps that exist between people all over the world.

Mary Gomez, Director of Interpreting Services

Mary M. Gomez has been with CAP for ten years as the Interpreter Services Coordinator.  She has been interpreting English-Spanish as far back as she can remember.  Mary graduated with a B.A. in International Relations from Florida International University.

When Mary is not working she enjoys spending time with her family back home in Miami, Florida. She is the eldest of five children and loves being ‘Tia” to five nieces and one nephew.  Always willing to try new and exciting adventures, she anxiously awaits good weather, especially for her hot air balloon outings.

Another very important part of her life, is Charlie, a miniature rescue poodle she adopted.  You will rarely see one without the other, including at the CAP offices! (see his BIO below).

Kathy Shuford, Interpreting Coordinator

Kathy Shuford has been with CAP for almost two years. She is a Receptionist and Interpreter Service Coordinator. Kathy is a positive and calming presence to all who know her. Her willingness to work as a team-player is exemplary.

When Kathy is not at work she enjoys spending time with her family. She and her husband, Artis, have a son and daughter and two grandsons. They lovingly refer to her as “GG”.  Kathy also enjoys returning home to the North Carolina mountains. There she can recharge her batteries with the natural beauty, quiet reflection, and most of all, the memories which are dear to her heart.

Founders

Pat Hauser and Elaine Montgomery co-founded CAP, Inc. in 1994. For almost 20 years they provided the highest quality of interpreting services throughout the Triad and southern Virginia. In 2012 they decided to sell CAP, Inc. (This is where Kevin came into the picture). Both ladies have over 80 years combined of ASL interpreting experience. We at CAP are grateful to have them as part of our team, as they continue to represent CAP in the field, as interpreters.
